Winchester College Hosts Delegates from Top American Universities

19th November 2024

In November, Winchester College welcomed delegates from seven top US universities, each sharing valuable advice and insights on navigating the process of selecting and applying to American universities.

Representatives joined pupils and parents in the New Hall lecture theatre from the University of Chicago, Columbia University, Boston University, Carnegie Mellon University, Vanderbilt University, New York University, and the University of Michigan. All were touring the UK as part of the World Leading Schools’ Association’s College Admission Network.

Both pupils and parents who attended the conference listened to the panel discussion where delegates answered common questions about applying to universities in the United States. Key messages emphasised by all the delegates included the complexity of the application process, the holistic approach universities take in assessing applicants, the importance of starting early, the need to find a good fit between a student and an institution, and the advice not to second-guess what universities are looking for in candidates.

After lunch there was a chance for pupils and parents to meet and talk with all of the delegates (and pick up some coveted free merchandise) at the university fair.

While they were here, the delegates took part in our Remembrance Service in chapel and two minutes’ silence, had lunch in a boarding house, and were taken on tours of the school and city by current pupils: coming away with a deeper understanding of the school, our pupils and the role that Div plays in a Winchester College education.
